The Elkhorn Iron & Timber Co. RR is my model railroad. It fits into a 17' x 32' custom designed room. The scale is 1:48 (1/4" equals a foot) O scale; the gauge is approximately 30", commonly referred to as On30. The track is Micro Engineering code 83 weathered flextrack; the ties are weathered barn wood gray. Turnouts are modified Peco HO code 83; every other tie was removed; tie ends are buried in the ballast to disguise their shorter length. The EI&TCo. is a freelanced railroad set in the Southern Appalachian mountains of East Tennessee and Western North Carolina. The era is 1947. It is a backwoods operation primarily bringing logs out of the woods to the Braemer sawmill. Other features include a 40 square foot steel mill complex, and a 65 square foot waterfront scene. Most structures are scratchbuilt. The lower level is reached by way of a long sloping incline and continues the themes depicted on the upper level. I have been working in On30 since about 1975.
